Canton, NY – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls took on The SUNY Canton Roos in the first of two conference games on the weekend. The back and forth game went into double overtime before the Roos came out victorious with a 77-75.
The first half of the game was a low scoring, defensive battle as the Owls shot 30% from the field and the Roos shot 29%. Canton would have the biggest lead, of seven points in the first half before the Owls tied it back up at 27 going into halftime.
The second half was just as competitive on the defensive end. The Owls were led by DeAndre Duncombe's (Jr. Port St. Lucie, FL) 11 points on 5-9 shooting. UMPI found themselves down by five points with 1:30 left in regulation. Shyquinn Dix (Jr. Stamford, CT) came down the court and hit a jump shot to bring it within three and then followed with a defensive rebound and a cross court assist to Griffin Guerrette (So. Presque Isle, ME), who tied the game with a clutch three. A couple more stops by both teams brought the game into overtime.
Once again the game went back and forth in the first overtime, as both teams came away with steals and transition buckets before both Wilburn Griffith (Sr. Queens, NY) of UMPI finished with a layup to give the Owls a two point lead, once again assisted by Dix. Joseph Warner answered with a game tying layup with nine seconds left, two of his 25 points on the game to go along with his 21 rebounds.
Quran Dubois of Canton scored a couple of big buckets in the second overtime, before the Owls answered off of Duncombe's clutch free throws and a huge three by TeVon Hines (Sr. Alexandria, VA) brought the game within two. Griffith once again hit a big shit to tie the game, and once again assisted by Dix. A late game foul put the Roos up one, the Owls missed their next shot and finished the game with two turnovers before having to foul and eventually losing the game by three points.
Guerrette finished the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds, Duncombe also finished with 19 points six rebounds and four assists. Hines had 12 points and ten rebounds.
The Owls will play the Roos again tomorrow for their second game of the doubleheader before heading back to UMPI.
