Presque Isle, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls men's basketball team had their home opener vs U-Maine Machias. UMPI would get the win 84-66 after holding off a late game comeback from the Clippers.
The Owls came out of the gate hot with a 31-11 lead early in the game, led by Shyquinn Dix (Jr. Stamford, CT), scoring ten of the 31 in the first ten minutes of the game. Going into the half with a 49-33 lead, UMPI's defense causing eight first half turnover for the Clippers. Dix and Griffin Guerrette (So. Presque Isle, ME) combined for 27 points off of 9-14 from the field and 7-8 from three in just the first half.
After an 18-4 run in the middle of the second half the Clippers were able to bring it to a ten point game with eight minutes to go in the game. Within a quick three minute the Owls were able to bring the lead back up to 18 before eventually putting the game away.
Great all around performances by many of the players on UMPI roster, led by Dix, finishing with 22 points off 9-14 shooting and 4-7 from three and five rebounds. Guerrette finished with 19 points off 7-15 from the field and 3-5 from three and adding five assists. Te'Von Hines (Sr. Alexandria, VA) had 12 points off 5-7 from the field and five rebounds. DeAndre Duncombe (Jr. Port St. Lucie, FL) added 12 points in his first game of the season, coming off of injury.
The Owls offensive performance was highlighted with a 50% shooting performance from the field and 42% from three and finishing with a season low six turnovers as a team. This win brings the Owls to a .500 record at 2-2 before hitting the road and heading to California for a Thanksgiving Tournament.
