Lyndonville, VT – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls completed the weekend sweep over the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon Hornets with a 78-68 North Atlantic Conference win Saturday afternoon. The Owls improve to 9-10 overall and 3-7 in NAC play. The Hornets fall to 2-18 overall and 0-9 in conference.
Leading the way for the Owls were captains Shyquinn Dix (So. Stamford, CT) and Wilburn Griffiths (Jr. Queens,NY). Dix scored a team-high 28 points going 7-11 from the field, 6-10 from three, and 8-10 from the line. Dix also grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists. Griffiths recorded his second double-double of the weekend with ten points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Griffiths would also record three assists, one steal, and one block.
Quinn Mitchell (Sr. Meriden, CT) was one rebound short of the Owls having another player record a double-double as Mitchell scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Griffin Guerrette (Fr. Presque Isle, ME) had another solid performance for UMPI with 18 points. Luke Petersen (So. Perth, AU) led the Owls in assists with six assists on the day.
The Hornets were led by Ricky Shuford who had a game-high 30 points. Shuford would shoot 13-30 from the field and also grabbed 13 rebounds to complete the double-double. Kyle Cary also recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, 10 of which were on the offensive end.
To start the game Parker Onorato (Fr. Bath, ME) would nail a three-pointer from the left wing, followed by three made layups by Griffiths, and a three pointer and made free throw by Dix to take a quick 13-2 lead four minutes into the game. The Hornets would answer with a 10-3 run to bring the score to 16-12 in favor of the Owls with 11:47 remaining in the half. The rest of the half would go back and forth as the Owls took a 35-30 lead into the break.
The first seven minutes of the second half had the Owls holding a slight single digit lead, before Mitchell hit one of his three threes and Te'Von Hines (Jr. Woodbridge, VT) converted a layup helping UMPI take a 52-39 lead with 13:07 left in the game forcing a NVM-Lyndon timeout. After a made layup out of the timeout by Shuford, Dix would respond with a pull-up three and Guerette would make a steal on the following possession finishing with a fast break layup to push the Owls lead to 57-41 with 11:45 left in the game.
Over the final ten minutes of the game the Hornets would do damage on the offensive glass grabbing multiple offensive rebounds to claw themselves back into the game. Shuford would score a layup with 1:23 remaining, bringing the score to 70-64 in favor of the Owls, however that is the closest the Hornets would come as UMPI went 6-6 from the line in the final 1:10 of the game, earning the 78-68 victory.
The Owls are back in action Wednesday at 5:30 PM against Maine Maritime Academy at Wieden Gymnasium.
