Owls Fall in Overtime

Presque Isle, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle forced overtime on a goaltend violation on a three-point shot by Shyquinn Dix (SO. Stamford, CT) that tied the game at 67-67 with five seconds remaining in regulation.  In overtime, the Owls would strike first with a made free throw by Dix to take a one-point lead 19 seconds into the overtime period.  Canton would answer with a made free throw of their own with 4:21 remaining by Brandon Atkinsson tying the game at 68 a piece. 

After back to back empty possessions for both teams Dix would drain a midrange jumper to take a 70-68 lead with 3:15 remaining.  Joseph Werner would answer on the next possession, faking a handoff and driving the lane finishing with a two-handed slam as the game once again was tied at 70-70 with 2:52 remaining.  Dix would answer with another midrange jumper taking a 72-70 lead on the very next possession.  Adkisson once again would answer with two of his game-high 15 made free throws tying the game 72-72 with 2:12 left on the clock.  Both UMPI and Canton would fail to score on their following possessions.  Jordan Stewart would make a steal and complete the fast break layup with 1:08 left in the game to take a two-point lead. 

The following possession Canton would take a charge and convert on the next possession with two made free throws by Stewart extending the lead to 76-72 with 40 seconds remaining.  After an UMPI timeout Te'Von Hines (JR. Woodbridge, VA) drained a three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining closing the lead to 76-75.  After an Owls foul, Danny Santana would make one of two free throws extending the Roos' lead to 77-75.  UMPI was unable to convert on the next possession and was forced to foul with three seconds remaining.  Adkisson would make the first free throw and miss the second as the Owls would rebounded the missed free throw attempt and take a timeout with three seconds remaining down 78-75.  Werner made a steal on the inbounds play to seal the overtime victory for the Roos.

Leading the way for Canton was Adkisson and Robert Holiday Jr. who scored 17 points apiece.  Adkisson went 15-19 from the free throw line while Holiday went 7-17 from the field and 2-5 from beyond the arc.  Stewart went 10-11 from the free throw line and chipped in with 16 points.  Canton would go 34-43 from the free throw line, while UMPI went 7-13 from the line for the game.

Dix lead the way for the Owls with a career and game-high 34 points.  Dix went 14-27 from the field and 3-7 from three, while also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists.  Hines nearly recorded a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.  Jahvion Lockridge (SO. Grand Rapids, MI) played great defense and recorded a career-high three blocks while also grabbing seven rebounds.

The Owls fall to 6-9 on the season and 0-6 in North Atlantic Conference play while Canton improves to 9-8 overall and 5-1 in conference.  The Owls are back in action at Thomas College on Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
