Presque Isle, ME - The UMPI Men's Basketball Team got off to a bit of a slow start Friday evening but midway through the 1st half they went on solid run and then continued that into the 2nd half in a convincing 75 to 60 win over the University of Maine-Machias Cliipers at Wieden Hall in a non-conference match-up.
5 minutes into the game Jahvion Lockridge (S0. Grand Rapids, MI) scored on a breakaway to give the Owls an early 5 to 4 lead. The Clippers would respond and go up 14 to 8 when Alexander Blake and Dante Ramos both connected from 3 point range and Trey Thompson scored on a roll down the lane on a feed from Thomas Papagionopolis. Owls 6'4" forward Wil Griffiths (Jr. Queens, NY) would score off an offensive rebound and a Shyquinn Dix (So. Stamford, CT) foul line jumper that tickled the twine would tie the game at 14 apiece. UMPI would grab the lead in the last 6 minutes of the half and go into the break ahead 32 to 26.
The Owls would come out of the halftime break hot and quickly built a 20 point lead on UMM which included 2 dunks by Wil Griffiths that brought roars from the crowd. An Eric Anthony 3 pointer on an assist from DeAndre Duncombe with 8 minutes remaining in the game gave UMPI a commanding 60 to 36 advantage.
The Clippers (4-9) were led by 6'6" senior guard Dante Ramos who scored a game-high 26 points and hauled in 7 rebounds. Trey Thompson added 15 points and pulled down 21 boards.
Next up: UMPI will host Husson University for two games after the mid-Winter break on January 4th and 5th.
