Fort Kent, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Basketball Team made the trip North to UMaine-Fort Kent Wednesday evening and came away with a solid 80 to 70 win at the UMFK Sports Center. The victory for the Owls (5-5) was their third consecutive win with one game remaining before the mid-winter break. The Bengals (4-10) were coming off a 126 to 84 win over the College of St. Joseph Vermont and looking to get the win on their home floor but UMPI prevailed in a physical ballgame between the two teams.
The Owls maintained a 6 to 10 point lead throughout the 1st half shooting at a 50% clip from the floor. Guards DeAndre Duncombe (Fr. Port St. Lucie, FL) and Shyquinn Dix (So. Stamford, CT) each scored 10 points in the opening half for Me-Presque Isle and Griffin Guerrette (Fr. Presque Isle, ME) scored 8 while grabbing 6 rebounds before the break as the Owls led 38 to 32 at the intermission.
Duncombe would nail a 3 pointer early in the 2nd half and Dix would knock down a jumper to put the Owls up by 11 points 43 to 32. UMFK would get it as close as 56 to 54 on a Bryce Gilbert two pointer with 10:54 remaining but UMPI would pull ahead by 11 points four minutes later on a Duncombe jumper.
Duncombe would pace the Owls offensively with 23 points and Dix scored 19 while dishing out 6 assists and grabbing 5 rebounds. Guerrette added 14 points and hauled down 8 boards while Wilburn Griffiths (Jr. Queens, NY) added 12 points and 7 rebounds. Te'Von Hines (Jr. Woodbridge, VA) pulled down a team-high 9 boards.
UMFK was led by junior guard Chance Cole who scored a game-high 37 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Senior forward Jarid Walton added 10 points for the Bengals.
