UMPI Comes Up Short in Comeback

Presque Isle, ME – For the second game in a row the University of Maine at Presque Isle had a late game rally that came up just short as the University of Maine at Farmington swept the weekend with an 80-74 win Saturday afternoon over the Owls.

The Owls would once again jump out to an early lead scoring the game's first five points.   However, the Beavers would go on a 13-2 run to take a 13-7 lead midway through the first half.  The largest lead of the first half would be held with the Beavers as Amir Moss (Jr., Portland, ME) made a pair of free throws as UMF took a 43-29 lead with 1:42 left in the first.  UMPI would go on a 4-0 run to end the half of a pair of jump shots from Jahvion Lockridge (So, Grand Rapids, MI) and Eric Anthony (Jr., Baltimore, MD) as the Beavers went into the break up 43-33.

UMF would start off the second half strong going on a 20-13 run extending their lead to 63-46 with 11:28 left in the game. Shyquinn Dix (So., Stamford, CT) would hit threes on back to back possessions sparking a 10-0 run as the Owls defense would hold UMF scoreless for the next four minutes, closing to within seven points, 63-56.

After an UMPI turnover UMF would have the ball with 1:15 left in the game up 76-72 when Lockridge made a spectacular block and the Owls went the other way with Will Griffiths (Jr., Queens, NY) knocking down a jump shot as the owls pulled within two, 76-74.  UMPI would get another stop and retained position with 43 seconds left but could not convert.  UMF would go a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line in the final 19 seconds to seal the victory.

All five UMF starters would reach double figures.  Moss lead the way with 19 points, Bill Ruby (Jr., Gorham, ME) scored 17 points on 7-11 from the field, Issac Witham (Jr., Skowhegan, ME) had 15, Milani Hicks (Sr., Scarbourgh, ME), and Riley Robinson (Jr., Dixfield, ME) chipped in with 12 points.

UMPI had a balanced scoring attack with three players scoring 14 points.  Griffiths and Dix both scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds a piece, while Lockridge scored 14 points off the bench while pulling down seven rebounds, four on the offensive end.
