Beavers Hold Off Late Owls Surge

Presque Isle, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle men's basketball team lost their home opener and first North Atlantic Conference game 84-74 to the University of Maine at Farmington.  The Owls jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 17:49 left in the first on a pair of three point shots by sophomore guard tandem DeAndre Duncombe (Port St. Lucie, FL) and Shyquinn Dix (Stamford, CT).  The Beavers would answer with a 10-0 run of their own taking a 10-6 lead with 15:43 left in the first.

The rest of the first half went back and forth with the largest lead of the half being seven in favor of the Beavers as they held a 22-15 lead with 9:38 left in the first half after a Riley Robinson (Jr., Dixifield, ME) layup.  Duncombe would hit a three point shot with five seconds left in the first off a feed from Dix as the Owls went into the half down 35-33. 

The Beavers would hold UMPI to only two points in the first 5:48 of the second half while rallying off 16 points of their own with a balanced attack with four different players scoring for the Beavers.  UMF would continue to keep control of the game pushing the lead to 67-48 with 7:45 left in the game.  The Owls kept fighting and went on a 22-10 run closing the lead to 77-70 with 2:13 left after another Duncombe three pointer.  However, the Beavers would seal the game going 7-8 from the free throw line to take the 84-74. 

Robinson and Milani Hicks (Sr., Scarborough, ME) both scored 21 points to lead the Beavers to the victory.  Hicks finished with a double double as he also grabbed 13 rebounds, as he also scores his 1,000th career point.  UMF would have all three of their other starters in double figures with Issac Witham (Jr., Skowhegan, ME) with 13, Bill Ruby (Jr., Gorham, ME) with 11 points, and Amir Moss (Jr., Portland, ME) with ten.

Duncombe and Dix both finished with 22 points for the Owls.  Duncombe drained six three pointers and Dix hit four from beyond the arc and pulled down eight rebounds.

UMF improves to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in North Atlantic Conference play while UMPI falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.  Both are back in action tomorrow in a rematch at 1:00 pm at Wieden Hall on the University of Maine at Presque Isle campus.
