Waterville, ME – The UMPI Owls Men's Basketball Team (2-1) played Host Colby College (1-0) Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium and ran into a hot shooting Mules team coming up short in a 109 to 68 loss on the Whitmore/Mitchell Court.
The Mules hit nine 3 pointers in the opening half with 6'2" junior guard Alex Dorion dropping five of those from deep range as Colby built a 53 to 41 lead after 20 minutes of play. The Owls cut into the Colby lead midway through the first half when Griffin Guerrette (Fr. Presque Isle, ME) scored on a strong drive to the hoop and was fouled. Guerrette hit the free throw for the conventional 3 point play. Eric Anthony (Jr. Baltimore, MD) followed with a 3 pointer from 22 feet out and UMPI was within 5 points 31 to 26. Colby continued to shoot it well as Dorion hit two more 3 pointers in the last 1:30 of the half around two hoops by DeAndre Duncombe (So. Port St. Lucie, FL). 17 first half turnovers hurt the Owls in the opening half.
The Mules didn't' slow down in the 2nd half and shot 48.3% for the game from the floor while hitting on 17 of 38 shots from behind the arc and methodically distanced themselves from the Owls.
UMPI was led offensively by DeAndre Duncombe with 17 points. Guards Eric Anthony and Griffin Guerrette scored 13 and 11 points respectively. Guerrette added 4 assists while Te'Von Hines (Woodbridge, VA) tallied 8 points and pulled down a team-high 7 rebounds.
Alex Dorion paced a balanced Colby team with 19 points, Noah Tyson had 18 points and Wallace Tucker netted 14 points.
