Waterville, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Basketball Team kicked off the 2018-19 season with a convincing 79 to 57 win over Norwich University (0-1) in a game played at Thomas College Friday evening. The game was the second of two ballgames in the Charlie Ryan Tipoff Tournament as the Host Thomas College Terriers defeated UMaine-Augusta 100 to 75 in the 5:30 game.
UMPI (1-0) jumped out to a commanding 20 to 6 lead midway through the first half before the Cadets closed the gap to 30 to 24 at the halftime break. Norwich stayed within striking distance of the Owls through the first 9 minutes of the second half before Me-Presque Isle would go on a run and open the game up. Griffin Guerrette (Fr. Presque Isle, ME) would hit a big 3 point shot on an assist from Shyquinn Dix (So. Stamford, CT) to put the Owls up 57 to 42. Just over a minute later Guerrette would knock down another 3 pointer on a feed from DeAndre Duncombe (So. Port St. Lucie, FL) to up the UMPI lead to 60 to 42.
Pacing the Owls offensively were DeAndre Duncombe with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Teammate Shyquinn Dix added 16 points, 11 rebounds and dished out 4 assists, and freshman Griffin Guerrette scored 11 point for UMPI. Te'Von Hines (Jr. Woodbridge, VA) grabbed 8 boards, Quinn Mitchell (Sr. Meriden, CT) had 6 rebounds and 5 assists, and KJ Minter (Fr. Elkton, MD) recorded 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners.
Norwich was led by Jesse Davis with 15 points and 7 rebounds and Christopher Bryant with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
