PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (12-12) would take the lead in the waning seconds to secure an 85-82 victory over the College of St. Joseph's Fighting Saints (2-20) on Saturday evening.
A 12-3 run by the Saints would give them control of the game midway through the first half. UMPI would fight out of an 11-point hole to be down by just two at the half.
From that point on the game would remain close. In a night that consisted of nine ties and 13 lead changes, St. Joseph's would fight back from a six-point deficit late to tie the game at 77 with under a minute to play. UMPI would go to the line and convert two opportunities to reclaim the lead, then force a turnover and get a Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) layup to go up two scores. The Fighting Saints would get their opportunities from there, but were forced to continue to put the Owls on the charity stripe. Anthony Chacho (SR, Watertown, CT) would go four for four from the line in the final seconds to close out the three-point victory for the Owls.
While the Fighting Saints would shoot 43.8% from the floor in the matchup, the Owls would force 14 turnovers and only turn it over on their end seven times.
Chacho would have a strong game, scoring 22 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and piling up seven assists. Collins would also add 22 points, while Maurice Harris (SR, Miami, FL) would end with 17 points and five rebounds. Deandre Duncombe (FR, Port St. Lucie, FL) would score 15 points.
The Owls wrap up regular season play on Thursday at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. That game is scheduled for 7 pm. The Owls have also qualified for post season play. As the #2 in the ACAA playoffs they will open up against Valley Forge at Pine Manor on February 24th.
