PRESQUE ISLE, ME – On senior day U Maine Presque Isle Owls (11-12) got a big win over the Unity College Rams (5-15), taking the decision by a final score of 78-56.
After a closely contested opening ten minutes, the Owls defense would tighten. The Rams would go on a seven minute scoring drought, during which UMPI would rattle off 14 points and open up a 16-point lead. The Rams would snap out of it and cut into the lead, but would go into the break down by ten.
Both teams would shoot the ball well in the second half, and knock down over 50% of their attempts from the field. The Rams would get three-point baskets on back-to-back possessions and find themselves down by just four points with 12:26 remaining. The Owls would respond and go on a 27-2 run over the next six minutes. Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would be responsible for 12 of those points over that time period, allowing UMPI to put the game away.
Collins would end the game with 22 points to lead all scorers. Deandre Duncombe (FR, Port St. Lucie, FL) would score 15 points, grab seven rebounds, and be credited with six assists. Maurice Harris (SR, Miami, FL) would end with 13 points and five rebounds, while Wilburn Griffiths would score 13 points and add six rebounds off the bench.
Prior to the game the Owls recognized five seniors that are nearing the end of their career with UMPI. Anthony Chacho (Watertown, CT), Kevin Collins, Kim Collins (Fort Washington, MD), Kristijan Gavrilovski (Gostivar, Macedonia), and Maurice Harris (Miami, FL) were all honored in a pregame ceremony.
The Owls will play their last home game of the season on Saturday when they host St. Joseph's College of Vermont at 3 pm. They will then wrap up their regular season schedule a week from Thursday with a trip to Fort Kent.
