CANTON, NY – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (8-9) avenged Friday's loss to the SUNY Canton Roos (5-13) on Saturday afternoon. A big second half would propel Owls to a 66-53 victory. The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Owls.
The Roos would put pressure on the Owls in the first half. UMPI would put SUNY Canton on the free throw line 16 times, and the host team would convert on 11 of those attempts. That would put the Owls down eight at the half.
UMPI would turn up their defensive pressure in the second half, only allowing the Roos to connect on 23.5% of their shots from the field. With UMPI trailing 41-30, senior Kevin Collins (Fort Washington, MD) hit a three-pointer and get fouled on the ensuing possession, and he converted both attempts from the charity stripe. The Owls would go on a 17-5 run that would give them the lead for the first time since late in the first half. The Roos would tie the game with just over five minutes remaining, but the Owls would respond to retake the lead for good. SUNY Canton would hit a jump shot with 4:11 remaining, but that would be their last points of the game. The Owls would score 11 points down the stretch to seal the victory.
UMPI would hit 52% of their shots in the second half, an improvement on their 29.4% from the first half.
Kevin Collins would lead all scorers with 21 points. Anthony Chacho (SR, Watertown, CT) ended the game with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Maurice Harris (SR, Miami, FL) would score 11 and grab nine rebounds.
The Owls return home for a matchup with instate rival, the University of Maine at Machias on Wednesday evening. That game is scheduled for 7 pm and is a rematch from a contest earlier this season which the Owls won 75-58 in Machias.
