ALFRED, NY – A poor shooting night would haunt the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (7-9) as they would never overcome a first half deficit. UMPI would fall on the road to the Alfred State Pioneers (11-5) by a final score of 54-46.
The two teams would trade leads early and the Owls would get an Anthony Chacho (SR, Watertwon, CT) basket with 14 minutes remaining to take a 12-11 lead. UMPI would struggle to find ways to score from that point on in the first half, as they would net just nine points for the rest of the opening period. Despite that, the Owls would remain in the game, as Alfred State would cling to a small lead from that point forward. UMPI would go on a five plus minute scoring drought late in the half to allow the Pioneers to open up an 11-point lead at the half. The Owls would connect on just 29% of their shots in the first half, including converting just three of their attempted three-point shots, while Alfred State would knock down 53.8% of their attempts from the field.
After trailing by as many as 13 early in the second half, the Owls defense would start to lock down the Pioneers. Alfred State would shoot just five of 22 in the second half (22.7%), allowing UMPI to start chipping away at the deficit. A Chacho layup, followed by two converted free throws for the Owls would make the score 51-45 in favor of the Pioneers with 2:29 remaining. It would be as close as UMPI would get however, as they would not convert another field goal for the rest of the contest. Alfred State would end up converting free throws down the stretch, ending the game with an eight-point victory.
Deandre Duncombe (FR, Port St. Lucie, FL) would lead all scorers with twelve points, while Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would add nine points. Chacho would score seven points and add eight rebounds to his night, while Maurice Harris (SR, Miami, FL) would end the game with seven points and seven rebounds.
The Owls continue a New York swing as they will go to SUNY Canton for a pair of games with the Roos on Firday night and Saturday afternoon. Friday's tip is scheduled for 7 pm, and the two teams will turn around and face off at 1 pm on Saturday.
