DELHI, NY – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (7-8) would find a way to slow down the high scoring offense of the SUNY Delhi Broncos (11-10) on Monday night, but the host Broncos would hang on to win a tight contest at home. A late run would give SUNY Delhi the 56-51 victory.
The Broncos had scored 90 or more points in their previous three games coming into the contest, but were held to just 26.6% shooting from the floor, including only connecting on six of 25 attempts from behind the three-point arc. While the Owls shot a touch better at 31.3% from the floor, they too struggled from deep, converting on six of 32 attempts from three. Nineteen turnovers would plague the Owls as the Broncos would score 19 points off of those turnovers.
UMPI would hold their biggest lead of the game with 2:49 remaining in the first half, an eleven point advantage. Their last lead of the game would come at 4:39 remaining, but the Broncos would outscore the Owls 13-5 in the final five minutes of the game. UMPI would have a chance to tie the game late, but a three-point attempt would fall short, the Broncos would hit their ensuing free throws and seal the five-point victory.
Jordan Fragale (SO, Baldwinsville, NY) would lead all scorers with 18 points. William Knight (SO, Valley Stream, NY) would score 15, while Payton Dean (SO, Harpursville, NY) would record a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would lead the Owls with 11 points and eight rebounds. Anthony Chacho (SR, Watertown, CT) recorded a double-double as well, scoring ten points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
The Owls continue their road trip and will visit Alfred State on Wednesday evening. That game will start at 7 pm.
