PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (7-6) finish the second half of a weekend sweep, with a 95-61 win over the University of New Brunswick – St. John Seawolves (2-6) on Sunday night.
After a back and forth battle early, the Owls took charge defensively to take control of the game. A 10-0 run late in the first half gave UMPI a 34-14 lead. Behind their strong defensive effort, holding the Seawolves to only 35.5% from the field, the Owls led 52-29 at the half. They would shoot over 55% from the field and 50% from behind the three-point arc in the first half.
The Owls continued to assert themselves defensively in the second half, holding the Seawolves to under 35% from the field. UMPI used their athleticism to continue to push their offensive pace, putting pressure on UNB's defense. The Seawolves continued to fight back, but the Owls 30 point lead was too much. UMPI would finish the game shooting 53% from the field and 40% from behind the three, holding the Seawolves to 35% from the field.
Anthony Chacho (SR, Watertown, CT) would lead the Owls with 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists; shooting 9-11 from the field and 5-6 from behind the three. Willburn Griffiths (SO, Queens, NY) brought energy early, finishing the game with 15 points and 9 rebounds. DeAndre Duncombe (FR, Port St. Lucie, FL) scored 11 points and added 8 assists. Leading the bench, Ronkevis Clardy ( JR, Wilmington, DE) finished the game with 11 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds.
Jacob Vickers (FR, Lower Derby, NB) led the Seawolves with 21 points, shooting 8-12 from the filed.
The Owls will host Bowdoin College this Tuesday, January 9th at 1:00PM.
