Owls Sink Clippers on the Road

MACHIAS, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (3-3) cruised to a 17-point victory over the Maine-Machias Clippers (3-4) Thursday evening in Machias.  The Owls would end up winning by a final score of 75-58.

Neither team would have an advantage in the early going, but the Clippers would take their biggest lead of the game of three on two separate occasions, the latter being with 13:27 remaining in the half and the hosts holding a 12-9 lead.  With just over ten minutes to play in the half, and the two teams tied at 24, the UMPI defense would step up.  The Clippers would hit just one field goal, a three-pointer, before the halftime break, and the Owls would go on a 14-4 run to take a ten-point lead into the locker room.

UMPI would not relent in the second half, and an 11-4 run in the early stages of the second half would extend the lead for the Owls.  Keeping the pressure up, the visitors from the north would build a 24-point lead with five minutes to play, allowing them to cruise to the final score of 75-58.

Wilburn Griffiths (SO, Queens, NY) would lead all scorers with 20 points.  He would also grab six rebounds in the contest.  Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would put pressure on the Clippers by getting to the charity stripe ten times, converting seven free throws on his way to 13 points and five assists.  Deandre Duncombe (FR, Port St. Lucie, FL) would add 12 points and eight rebounds, while Anthony Chacho (SR, Watertown, CT) would score ten points, grab four rebounds, while adding four assists and three steals to his night.  Maurice Harris (SR, Miami, FL) helped the Owls get the rebounding advantage by grabbing 11.

It was the second win of the season for the Owls over the Cippers, as they faced off earlier this season in the Charlie Ryan Classic hosted by Thomas College.  The Owls won that game by a score of 85-71.  These two teams will meet again in Presque Isle on January 24th.

The Owls will return to action on Tuesday, December 5th, when they take on NCAA Division I University of Maine Black Bears (1-6).  That games tips off at 7:30 pm at the Cross Insurance Center.
