PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls Men's Basketball team (11-10) hosted their in-state rival University of Maine at Machias Clippers (8-12) on Thursday. The Owls would defend their home court and win the game by a final score of 79-63.
The Owls would jump out to an early lead, but the Clippers would fight back and tie the game at ten. UMPI would respond with a 13-3 run that would put them in control. The Owls would shoot 56.3% from the floor in the first half, allowing them to build that lead. The two teams would go intermission with the Owls comfortably in control with a score of 46-31.
UMPI would maintain that lead to start the second half, but some miscues allowed the Clippers to take advantage and make the game interesting. With 11:21 remaining Machias would trail by just seven points. The Owls would go back to work offensively and a 15-3 run would dash all hopes of a comeback for visitors. UMPI would win the game by a 16-point margin.
The Owls, who would shoot 48.4% from the field for the game, were led by Derek Healy (SR, Hanover, MA) who would finish with 18 points. Maurice Harris (JR, Miami, FL) would tally a double-double, scoring 17 points and collecting ten rebounds. Jordan Cook (SR, Saffron Waldon, UK) scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Kim Collins (SR, Oxon Hill, MD) would add 11 points.
The Owls will host the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Sunday (20-8) at 2 PM. UMPI Athletics will host their annual Think Pink games in connection with Relay for Life. Proceeds from the day's events will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
