PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Basketball team (8-8) needed overtime to beat the #12 USCAA ranked SUNY Delhi Broncos (9-10) on Saturday. The Owls would win by a final score of 78-75 at home.
The Broncos would take nearly eight minutes to score giving the Owls ample time to build a lead. UMPI would lead by 16 at one point, and take a 12-point lead into the locker room at halftime. SUNY Delhi turned up the intensity in the second half and put the pressure back on UMPI, eventually tying the game at 35 with just over 15 minutes to play. The Broncos would take their first lead of the game at the 12-minute mark, and the two teams would match each other step for step down the stretch. Free throws turned out to be a key factor in the game, as SUNY Delhi would find themselves down late and were forced to extend the game by putting the Owls on the line. Down three with just seconds remaining, David Haye (SR, Spring Valley, NY) would pull up from deep behind the three-point line and hit a remarkable long distance shot that would send the game into overtime. Once again the Broncos were forced to put the home team on the free throw line, and the Owls would be able to convert on their attempts. A last second attempt to tie the game resulted in a turnover, sealing the Owls three-point overtime victory.
Maurice Harris (JR, Miami, FL) would score 20 points and grab six rebounds in the contest. Kevin Collins (JR, Oxon Hill, ME) would also put up 20 points. Kim Collins (SR, Oxon Hill, MD) would grab seven rebounds and block four shots for the Owls. The Bronco's effort was led by Haye, who had an outstanding afternoon. He would score 34 points and grab 14 rebounds.
The Owls will host the USCAA #1 ranked Berkeley College (NY) (15-0) tomorrow afternoon. That game is scheduled for a noon tip. The Knights come in to Presque Isle with a 39 game win streak dating back to last season.
