Owls Falter at Home

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Basketball team (7-7) battled the Alfred State Pioneers (4-7) at home on Saturday afternoon.  The closely contested affair ended in Alfred State's favor, with the Pioneers earning a 59-53 road victory.

Defenses prevailed throughout the matchup as the Owls found it tough to score inside the three-point arc in the first half, as many of the shots they did hit were closely contested.  UMPI would stay in the game however, as turnovers would haunt both teams throughout the afternoon.  Despite many opportunities to open up a lead the Pioneers' biggest lead of the half would be six points.  The Owls would make a run and claim a four-point lead late, but would not score in the final 3:50 and Alfred State would take advantage and take a 26-25 lead into the break.

The second half would play out much the way the first would with neither team able to get a clear advantage.  UMPI would take their biggest lead of the game at the 6:12 mark when Kevin Collins (JR, Oxon Hill, MD) would hit a three to put the Owls up six, but the home team would follow that up with a five-minute scoring drought.  UMPI would not hit another field goal the rest of the game, and shot poorly from the free throw line, allowing Alfred State to pull away with a six-point win.

Kevin Collins would lead all scorers with 20 points while grabbing five rebounds.  Maurice Harris (JR, Miami, FL) would record a double-double, scoring 11 points while grabbing 10 rebounds.  Marquis Edwards (SR, Queens, NY) was the scoring leader for the Pioneers with 11 points.

The Owls will be on the road on Monday when they travel to Bowdoin.  That game will tip at 7 PM.
