PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine Presque Isle Men's Basketball team (4-4) shot the ball well early and ended up with a 72-60 win over the Unity College Rams (3-8).
The Owls knocked down two three-point baskets in the opening minutes and would start the game on a 10-4 run. The Rams would answer back and pull to within two, but UMPI would not let them stick around, and go on an 18-3 run over the next five minutes to open a lead. The home team would shoot 58.6% from the field in the first half, including seven of 13 from three, and go to the locker room with a 43-24 lead.
The Owls would come out of the locker room strong and be up by as much as 28, and looked to be in control of the game. Unity would slowly chip away at the lead, however, as the Owls would not be able to keep up their torrid shooting pace. Though the Owls would lose focus towards the end, and some turnovers would allow Unity to go on some runs, time would run short on the Ram comeback, as the Owls would win with a twelve-point spread.
UMPI would total twelve steals on the afternoon and create 16 turnovers. The Owls would finish shooting 48.3% from the floor, but leave points on the free throw line as they were just eight of 17 from the charity stripe.
Kevin Collins (JR, Oxon Hill, MD) would lead all scorers with 19 points and six rebounds. Maurice Harris (SO, Miami, FL) would score nine points while grabbing nine rebounds, while teammates Derek Healy (SR, Hanover, MA) and Kim Collins (SR, Oxon Hill, MD) would also add 9 points apiece.
The Owls will go on the road next. They will face The Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, December 17th. That game is scheduled for a 2 PM tip.
