MACHIAS, ME – The University of Maine Presque Isle Men's Basketball team (2-4) secured their second win of the season by going on the road to beat the University of Maine at Machias (4-4) by a score of 68-62 on Monday night.
The two teams would go back and forth in this game all night, as the matchup would feature eight lead changes. Jordan Gillespie (SO, Bingham, ME) and Kevin Collins (JR, Oxon Hill, MD) would hit three pointers at the end of the first half to put the Owls up three at the break. After briefly surrendering that lead in the second half, UMPI would go on an eight minute, 17-2 run that would give them the biggest lead of the game. The 12-point lead was enough for the visiting team to hold on to as they would fight off the comeback attempt from Machias. A buzzer beater would pull the Clippers to within six, but the Owls would take a 68-62 road win.
The Owls were efficient offensively, shooting 46.7% from the floor. Though the Clippers would outrebound the Owls 39-29, UMPI would go to the free throw line 32 times, and hit on 21 of those attempts.
Derek Healy (SR, Hanover, MA) would knock down eleven of 13 free throws to end the night with 20 points. Kevin Collins would have a strong showing, scoring 15 points and grabbing six rebounds, while Kim Collins (SR, Oxon Hill, MD) would end the night with 14 points. Maurice Harris (SO, Miami, FL) would collect eight rebounds to go with his eight points.
The Owls will return home on Wednesday and face-off with Colby. That game is scheduled for a 7 PM tip in Wieden Gymnasium.
