ORONO, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Basketball team (1-3) took on The University of Maine (2-4) on Saturday. The NCAA Division I Black Bears flexed their muscle and beat a short-handed Owls team by a score of 96-45.
The Owls found themselves in a hole quickly, with U Maine opening up the game on a 10-2 run. UMPI would get hot for a stretch. Derek Healy (SR, Hanover, MA) would hit two three-point baskets, Kim Collins (SR, Oxon Hill, MD) would hit another one, and with 13 minutes remaining in the first half, Kevin Collins (JR, Oxon Hill, MD) would knock down a jump shot that would put the Owls in the lead. The 13-12 advantage would not last long, as the Black Bears would go on multiple runs, outscoring their guests 28-7 in the remainder of the half, and take a 20-point lead into the locker room.
UMPI would get the first basket of the second half, but that was as close as the game would be from that point on. U Maine would continue to pull away and would shoot 58.1% from the field in the second half, including knocking down 9 of 15 from the three-point line.
Austin Howard (JR, Louisville, KY) would lead the Black Bears with 19 points off the bench. Three other U Maine players would score in double digits, as they would spread the wealth on the afternoon. Maurice Harris (JR, Miami, FL) would lead the Owls with 16 points. Kim and Kevin Collins would both collect six rebounds in the effort.
UMPI stays in state and travels to in-county rival U Maine Fort Kent on Monday. The game is scheduled for a 7 PM tip.
