PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The Thomas Terriers (5-5) pulled away late to take down the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (4-7) by a score of 69-45 on Sunday afternoon.
The Owls jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, with four different UMPI players contributing to the cause. Unfortunately the lead would not last as they would go cold and not score a field goal for the next nine minutes. It would be just over five minutes left in the half when Kevin Collins (SO, Oxen Hill, MD) would hit a jumper, but by that time the Terriers had a 18-15 lead. Thomas would never surrender that lead as they used their size to take away the inside game of the Owls, and UMPI would shoot one of 15 from the three point line.
Down just four at half, the Owls showed some fight in the second half, drawing the score to within three on multiple occasions. Thomas was too good shooting throughout, hitting 52% of their shots, and finally pulled away. UMPI knocked down just 29.8% of their shots on the night, and just could not keep up with the Terriers pace.
Tyheem Simon (JR, Far Rockaway, NY) would lead all scorers with 23 points and grab six rebounds. Mike Akanji (SR, Lincoln, RI) would add 13 points and seven rebounds, and Carlos Gonzalez (SO, Kennebunk, ME) scored eleven points and eight rebounds. Kevin Collins would score eleven for the Owls in the losing effort.
The Owls will take a break for the Holidays before coming back to face Villa Maria College at home. The New Year's Eve day game will tip at 2 PM.
