WATERVILLE, ME – The Colby College Mules (4-1) pulled away late in the first half and fought off the University of Maine at Presque Isle (3-3) by a score of 82-68.
It appeared as though it was going to be a back and forth battle to start, as the Owls took an early lead but Colby would not let their guests pull away. Chase Vicaire's (SR, Mattawamkeag, ME) 15 first half points, including three of four from three point, would help keep the Owls in a back and forth battle. A quick 8-3 run from the Mules would finally put some distance in between the teams. Although the two teams would have identical shooting stats in the first half, the difference proved to be the Owls getting themselves in a bit of foul trouble. Twelve first half fouls would send Colby to the free throw line ten times, and they took advantage, converting on nine of those attempts.
That seven point deficit would be the closest the game would be. Although the Mules would never really pull away, they held a comfortable lead throughout the second half. The hosts would take advantage of Maine Presque Isle hitting just two of ten from behind the three point arc in the second half, while continuing their strong shooting performance. The Mules would hit four of ten from three while shooting 40% overall. The Owls would manage to cut the lead to eight with two and a half minutes left, but Colby would hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Vicaire would lead the Owls with 17 points. Brandon McGill (JR, Hamilton, NJ) would add 13 points and five rebounds, while Nick Lenhard (JR, Falcon, CO) would score ten points and have six assists. Sam Wilson would lead all scorers, knocking in 17 points in the win for the Mules. Chris Hudnut would add 16.
The Owls compete in the Camel/Cadet classic tournament this weekend, hosted by Connecticut College and the Coast Guard Academy. Their first game will be against Connecticut College at 6 PM on Saturday.
