Owls Erase 14-Point 2nd Half Deficit, But Fall Short vs. Saints

(RUTLAND, VT) -- College of St. Joseph (VT) men's basketball player Casey Hall nearly pulled off the rare "points (30), rebounds (10), blocks (8)" triple-double on Sunday afternoon to lead his Saints to a 77-66 home win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle.

The Saints improve to 10-15, while the Owls finish their season at 11-14.

Presque Isle never led in the contest, but also never let the game get completely away from them.  Trailing 21-8 seven minutes in, the Owls began their first of a few comeback charges.  Claude Louis (Jr./Union, NJ), Aaron Hutchins (Jr./East Millinocket, ME), and Michael Warner (Jr./Norwich, UK) each hit 3's during a 15-5 run that brought the Owls to within three, 26-23.

CSJ would boost the lead back up to 10, UMPI would cut it to five, before the Saints' Dre Anderson hit two free throws in the last minute for a 7-point halftime advantage.

The second half began as "feast or famine" for the Owls as their first 5 scores were from long distance.  The problem for the road team was that outside of two Louis free throws, that was all the scoring the team would get through the first 9 minutes of the half.  The draught from inside the arc lead to the Saints building a 61-47 lead with 11:03 remaining.

That is when, making one last push, the Owls took the ball inside.  A Jayson Burke (Fr./Bar Harbor, ME) tip in got things started.  Louis followed that up with a layup.  Then Patrick Manifold (Sr./Great Yarmouth, UK) added three on a "conventional" 3-point play.  By the time Gerardo Vasquez (Sr./Houston, TX) added his 2nd made layup to the run, the Owls found themselves down just one point, 65-64, with 5:22 remaining.

That is where the rally would stall as the final 4:30 on the clock saw CSJ finish the game with a 12-2 run that included five missed 3-point attempts by the Owls.

Hall, Anderson (21), and Ramel Anderson (16), combined for 67 of the Saints' 77 points.

The Owls were led by Louis' 19 points and 13 rebounds.  Manifold contributed 11 points and 10 boards, while Warner finished with 12 and 9, points and rebounds respectively.

Brad Trask (Sr./Easton, ME) finished with 11 points shooting 50% from the floor (4-8) including 50% (3-6) on three's.

Presque Isle's 11 wins are an 8-win improvement in head coach Jim Casciano's 2nd season at the helm of the team.
