(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- Mike McCoy hit a jumper with :54 remaining for the first lead of the 2nd half helping his Eastern Nazerene College men's basketball team sneak out of Presque Isle with a 70-68 win over the Owls.
ENC is now 13-3 on the season after the non-conference road victory. UMaine-Presque Isle drops to 8-10 after the heartbreaking loss.
Things looked good early for the home team thanks to a sizzling start from center Patrick Manifold (Sr./Great Yarmouth, UK). In the game's first 8 minutes, Manifold scored the Owls' first 18 points, staking the team an 18-14 advantage. By the end of the first half, Manifold had 23 points and the Owls had 35-31 lead.
In the second half, other Owls got into the action as the built up an 11-point lead after two Claude Louis (Jr./Union, NJ) free throws with 9:14 remaining.
From that point on however, the Lions began chipping away. Switching a zone defense seemed to help slow down Manifold, who managed 2 points in the final 6+ minutes. Also not helping Presque Isle hold their lead was mounting foul troubles. Starters Louis and Mike Warner (Jr./Norwich, UK) fouled out within 30 seconds of each other around the 3:00 mark.
The Owls were outscored 8-4 the rest of the way. UMPI had one last chance to lengthen the game, down three with 10 seconds remaining, Brad Trask (Sr./Easton, ME) missed a three-point attempt. Jayson Burke (Fr./Bar Harbor, ME) corralled the rebound and put the ball back up and in. However, with only 1.8 seconds remaining on the clock at that point, there was not enough time to foul, get the ball back, and get off another shot.
The Lions were led in scoring by Jaylen Owens' 17. Eric Lynch came off the bench to contribute 15.
Manifold finished his career day with 33 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds for his 5th "double-double" of the season.
Monday afternoon's game marked the final contest in a stretch of 3 games in four days for the Owls. They will now rest up this week before hosting SUNY-Canton this upcoming Saturday.
* Manifold's 33 points came on 11-15 shooting from the floor and 11-16 from the free throw line. Both those numbers are single-game highs for the 6'8 senior this season.
* Gerardo Vasquez's (Sr./Houston, TX) 8 assists in Monday's game was a season high.
* After hitting 21 three-pointers on Saturday in a win over UMaine-Augusta, the Owls struggled from long range on Monday shooting 3-20.
* Offensive rebounds played a big role in ENC's 2nd half comeback. For the game, the Lions pulled down 17 offensive boards to the Owls' 9.
