Late Comeback Falls Short

(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- University of Maine-Machais guard Elias Gutierrez scored 21 points on 8-11 shooting, including 3-3 from three-point land to lead the Clippers to a 72-66 road win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Wednesday night.

Machias improves to 2-4 while the Owls record evens at 2-2.

Early on, the Clippers controlled the tempo and jumped out to a 12-4 lead.  The Owls began to chip away at that lead and by 12:39, a Claude Louis (Jr./Union, NJ) jumper gave UMPI the lead at 16-15.  The two teams played back and forth for the rest of the half until a Presque Isle ran off 7 points in the final 45 seconds to take a 40-36 lead into the locker room.

UMM's AC Ford got hot to start the second half, hitting three quick jumpers, the last of which being a 3-pointer that put the Clippers up 50-47.  Michael Warner (Jr./Norwich, UK) responded with a three of his own to knot the game.  A Warner jumper a minute later would tie the game at 52, but that is the last time the Owls would be able to pull even.

Over the next eight minutes Machias would double up UMPI, 14-7.

Down 68-61 with under three minutes remaining, the Owls made one last run.  A Patrick Manifold (Sr./Great Yarmouth, UK) jumper followed by a Louis 3-pointer got Presque Isle within two.  But the Clips hit 4-4 from the free throw line in the final :25 to seal the win.

Louis came off the bench to lead the Owls with 19 points.  Manifold finished with 16 points and 9 rebounds.

The Owls will travel to Colby College this weekend to take part in the Colby Invitational.  On Friday night, November 30th, they will take on Daniel Webster College.
