Owls' Upset Bid Falls Just Short

(FORT KENT, ME) --  After Tuesday's 75-64 win by the University of Maine-Fort Kent men's basketball team over the University of Maine-Presque Isle that saw the Bobcats build a lead of 20 points in the contest, one could hardly be blamed to not have high expectations for a close game during the rematch between the two teams on Friday.

But as even the most casual ESPN viewer is reminded, "that's why they play the games."

The Owls (3-14) came out as the aggressors at Fort Kent raining down three's in the first half and leading UMPI to a 40-27 advantage at the break.  Michael Warner (So./Norwich, UK) led the long-distance barrage going 3-3 in the game's first 20 minutes.

The Bengals (16-6) came roaring back in the second half, starting with an 11-0 run to pull the game to within two at 40-38.  The Owls righted the ship just in time and managed to stay in front of UMFK all of the way until the 4:00 mark of the game.

The teams stayed within 4 points of each other the rest of the way.  A pivotal moment came just under a minute remaining and Fort Kent clinging to a 62-60 lead.  During a disjointed offensive possession, UMPI's Aaron Hutchins (So./East Millinocket, ME) released an off-balance three point attempt from the right wing.  Wanting to get a good shot in this possession and seeing the confusion in his offense, Owls' coach Jim Casciano requested a time out.  The official between Hutchins and Casciano granted the time out request just before the three of them watched Huthins' three find nothing but the bottom of the net.  The three that would have given UMPI a one-point lead was waved off.

Out of the timeout, the Owls were unable to get a shot off and were forced to foul the rest of the way.

UMFK's Jeremy Thomas led all scorers on the night with 24.  Patrick Manifold (Jr./Great Yarmouth, UK) posted a double-double for the Owls scoring 19 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Presque Isle returns home on Sunday, February 12th to celebrate Senior Day and welcome in Virginia University - Lynchburg.  Game time is set for 3:00pm.
