MACHIAS, ME -- The last time the University of Maine-Presque Isle men's basketball team faced the University of Maine-Machias back in early December, a big 2nd half showing from the Owls could not overcome a sluggish first half and the Clippers pulled out a 63-57 victory. A month and a half later in Machias Wednesday night, the storyline was the same. Machias finished up the first half strong and took a 37-23 lead at the half and then held off several UMPI 2nd half runs pull out a 77-63 win.
The loss for the Owls (3-11) came despite a stellar performance from center Patrick Manifold (Jr./Great Yarmouth, UK). The 6'8 englishman scored 24 points on 9-18 shooting from the floor and hit 5-6 from the free throw line to score 24 points. Additionally, Manifold pulled down 13 rebounds (5 offensive), dished out two assists, and swatted away two Clippers shots.
After falling behind by 20 in the second half, UMPI, led by Manifold in the low post went on a run and got the game under ten, 49-40. But, as was the story for the majority of the night, the Clippers had the answer this time hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to build the lead right back up into double figures. Cold shooting from outside was a storyline for UMPI all night. The Owls finished 4-25 from behind the arc, a stark contrast from the 7-9 they accomplished in the teams' first meeting.
The Clippers (13-7) were lead in scoring by Hampton Mack's 20 while Will Lewis had 16.
Michael Warner (So./Norwich, UK) was the only other Owl to reach double digits in scoring. He had 10.
UMPI returns to action Friday night when they will host UMaine-Fort Kent. Gametime is set for 7:30pm.
