(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- SUNY-Canton's Scott Dixon put back an offensive rebound less than a second before the backboard lit up to give his Roos a 58-57 victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle at Wieden Hall on Sunday.

The back-breaking bucket capped a wild game between the two teams.  Six seconds earlier, the Owls' Aaron Hutchins (So./East Millinocket, ME) hit a deep three-pointer from the top of the key with a hand in his face to give UMPI a 57-56 advantage.  While the home crowd went wild, UMPI coach Jim Casciano called time out to set up his defense for the final 6 ticks.

Out of the time out, Canton's Khalid Vaughn took the inbounds pass and dribbled up the right sideline with UMPI's Gerardo Vasquez (Jr./Houston, TX) on his hip matching him step for step.  Racing from the other side of the court, Kyle Corrigan (Jr./Caribou, ME) stepped in front of Vaughn's path as he reached the paint.  The ensuing collision floored both players as Vaughn wildly flipped the ball at the basket on his way down.  The shot hit hard off the glass and ricocheted to the left side where an already in mid-air Dixon caught and put back the carom at the buzzer.

The heartbreaking loss negated not one but two double-digit comebacks by Presque Isle in the 2nd half.  Trailing 31-23, UMPI came out of the gates hot going on a 13-4 run to take a 36-35 lead after a Corrigan 3-pointer at the 15:42 mark.

After a SUNY timeout, the Roos came to life and immediately outscored UMPI 14-1 over the next five minutes.  Canton maintained a double-digit cushion as late as the 4:55 point in the game.  However UMPI proved to have one run left in them.  Starting with a Hutchins jumper, the Owls went on to score 13 of the game's next 15 points ending with the Hutchins 3 that gave UMPI their short-lived one point advantage.

Canton (9-6), who beat UMPI (3-10) two weeks ago in New York (68-45), was led in scoring by Vaughn (16) and Cato (16).  The Roos were solid from the free throw line hitting 14-19 while UMPI struggled to an 8-14 performance.

The Owls were led in scoring by Corrigan's 16.  Patrick Manifold (Jr./Great Yarmouth, UK) added 14 points and had 13 rebounds.

UMPI returns to the road on Wednesday, January 22nd, when they face UMaine-Machias.  The Clippers pulled out a 63-57 win over UMPI back on December 6th.  Gametime is 7:30pm.
