Owls Comeback Bid Falls Short
PRESQUE ISLE, ME 12/6/11 -- The University of Maine-Presque Isle men's basketball team made a valiant bid to overcome a double-digit first half deficit in the team's home opener against the University of Maine-Machias on Tuesday night, but the Owls could not quite get over the hump and eventually fell to the Clippers, 63-57.
Midway through the contest, the Owls (2-4) found themselves in a 17-point hole thanks in part to UMM shooting a perfect 5-5 from 3-point range. The Owls caught fire themselves in the 2nd half, going on a 26-10 run and cutting the Clipper lead to one at 48-47 with 7:33 left to play.
The Clippers (3-6) ran off the next five points to open up some breathing room. However, the Owls were not done yet as once again they battled back to within a point, 55-54 on a jumper by Kyle Corrigan (Jr./Caribou, ME) with 4:53 on the clock. On this night however, the Clippers would bend but not break as they went 4-4 from the free throw line in the game's final 30 seconds to seal the win.
Four UMPI players finished with double figure scoring with Aaron Hutchins (So./East Millinocket, ME) and Patrick Manifold (Jr./Great Yarmuth, UK) contributing 14 points apiece. Corrigan finished with 11 points while Michael Warner (So./Norwich, UK) had 10.
The Owls return to action on Thursday December 8th when they travel to Bangor to face the University of Maine-Augusta. Tip time is set for 7:30.
