PRESQUE ISLE, ME 12/10/11 -- The University of Maine-Fort Kent men's basketball team hit 12-of-13 shots from three-point range to defeat the host University of Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday afternoon, 80-58. UMFK's Jeremy Thomas led the Bengals' long distance barrage making 6-7 three's. Teammate Jeremy Bishop was 3-3 from downtown.
Fort Kent (6-5) started behind the arc early scoring their first nine points on a trio of three pointers in the opening minutes of the contest. Midway through the first half, a 3-pointer from the Bengals' Manny Odugbela gave UMFK 6 treys already and a 26-11 lead. UMPI battled back the rest of the half and pulled to within eight at 33-25 with an offensive rebound and put back by Brad Trask (Jr./Easton, ME) with under three minutes to go. However after a pair of UMPI missed free throws in the half's final minute, Thomas got the lead back up to double digits with another yet another three.
In the 2nd half, after a Kyle Corrigan (Jr./Caribou, ME) free throw brought the Owls (2-6) back to within 11, the Bengals went out on a 20-7 run to a take a commanding 65-41 lead.
One highlight for the Owls was provided by big 7'6 Robert Wegner (Fr./Strafford, NH) who was able to break free for a dunk that momentarily fired up the Wieden Gym crowd.
Leading scorers were Thomas for the Bengals with 22 and Patrick Manifold (Jr./Great Yarmuth, UK) with 17 for UMPI.
The Owls take a break from game action for the rest of December and will return to the court for a home game against Houghton (NY) College on Thursday, January 5th, 2012. Tip time is set for 6pm.
