Sluggish Start to Second Half Slows Owls

The University of Maine-Presque Isle men's basketball team got off to a quick start in their game at SUNY-Canton on Monday afternoon.  The Owls jumped out to a 17-8 lead on the Roos before Canton used a balanced scoring attack to run by UMPI, 68-45.

The Roos (7-4) had to play catch up for most of the first half but were able to push past the Owls in the final minutes.  Tyler Ellison converted a layup with 4:19 left to tie the score at 21-21 and then the Roos finally took the lead on a Irving Cato triple two possessions later.  After falling down by five, UMPI's Brad Trask (Jr./Easton, ME) hit a floating jumper just before the buzzer to trim their deficit to 28-25 at halftime.

The Roos never trailed for the remainder of the game and used a 9-0 run five minutes into the second half to stretch the lead into double digits.  The Owls did cut the lead down to eight points but three free throws from Ellison and another one from freshman Owen Luckie pushed the lead back to double figures where it would stay for the rest of the contest.

The Owls (2-8) were led in scoring by Gerardo Vazquez (Jr./Houston, TX) and Aaron Hutchins (So./East Millinocket, ME) with 12 and 10 respectively.  UMPI did not help themselves with a 4-14 performance from the free throw line.

UMPI returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Eastern Connecticut State to take on the Warriors.  Game time is set for 5:30pm.
