Bangor, ME - Husson University was looking to claim the top spot in the upcoming NAC Playoffs and helped their cause with a 15 to 7 win over the UMPI Owls in the opening game of Monday's doubleheader played at the John Winkin Diamond in Bangor.
The Eagles scored first when Kobe Rogerson reached on an UMPI infield error and Conor Maguire scored for an early 1 to 0 lead. The Owls bounced right back in the bottom of the 1st inning with an unearned run of their own. Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgwok, M) tripled to deep left center and scored when Alexe De La Pena reached first base on an infield error.
Husson would score twice in the 2nd inning when Rogerson delivered a 2 RBI single to leftfield. UMPI came right back again in the bottom of the inning when Justin Mason (Sr. Stamford, CT) singled to center scoring Colby Spencer. Ian McCray would tie the game up 3 to 3 when he crossed the plate on a Husson infield error.
Luke Covey drilled a triple scoring Ethan Stoddard in the 3rd inning as the Eagles scored three times to take a 6 to 3 lead.
Husson would open the game up in the 4th inning with key hits coming from Nolan Brown who hit an inside the park homerun bringing in 2 runs and Nick Guerrette followed with a homerun over the leftfield fence.
Alex Brooks got the win on the mound for the Eagles pitching 4 innings, giving up 3 runs (1 unearned) walking 0 and striking out 2. Will Stinson took the loss on the hill for UMPI. Stinson was the only repeat hitter for the Owls with a single and a triple.
Game #2: In the 2nd game of the aftrnoon, Husson scored 2 runs in the 1st inning and led 6 to 0 after the 3rd and rolled to a 10 to 0 win over the Owls. Kobe Rogerson continud his hot hitting stroking a RBI single scoring Conor Maguire with the game's first run and then Luke Covey doubled to rightfield scoring Rogerson for a 2 to 0 Eagles lead.
Rogerson added a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning and then RBI singles by both Nolan Brown and Nick Guerrette, and a Connor Maguire RBI on a fielder's choice, put Husson on top 6 to 0 after 3 innings of play.
UMPI could not muster any hits off Husson's starting pitcher Brandon Brunell (3-0) who pitched four innings and struck out 6 Owls hitters. Dustin Smith, Jacob Gauvin and Nolan Dousa each threw 1 inning of relief for the Eagles. Jordan Young (0-2) was the losing pitcher going 4.2 innings for Me-Presque Isle allowing 7 runs on 8 hits, while walking 5 and striking out 2. Ian McCray came on in relief for UMPI for throwing the final 2.1 innings on the hill.
Jacob Moreno (Fr. Bourne, MA), Braydon Kennedy (Fr. Titusville, FL), and Austin Coulston (So. Bullhead City, AZ) had the 3 Owls basehits. Husson had 11 base knocks on the game highligthd by Conor Maguire with 2 triples and 2 RBI.
Next up: UMPI will conclude thir 2019 sason at home with a doubleheader vs. Pine Manor on May 4th.
