Owls Lose Twinbill to Thomas College

Waterville, ME - Thomas College scored twice in the bottom of the 6th inning to open up a close game and go on to a 6 to 1 win over the UMPI Owls in the first game of a doubleheader played at Colby College Sunday afternoon.

The Terriers scored an unearned run in the 1st inning off UMPI starting pitcher Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) when Alexander Miller reached on an error and then raced home on a 2-out triple by Kyle Gleason putting Thomas up 1 to 0.

The score remained 1 to 0 into the bottom of the 4th inning when Tyler Gee connected for a RBI single scoring Dominic Esposito. Gee would later score the Terriers second unearned run of the game on a misplayed fly ball. In the borttom of the 5th frame, Thomas would add another run on a bases loaded RBI groundout by Esposito.

The Owls would get on the board in the top of the 6th as Stinson would double down the rightfield line scoring Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS) but UMPI couldn't come up with another key hit to keep the inning alive.

UMPI continued to hurt themselves in the field with errors giving up two more unearned runs in the bottom of the 6th and Thomas would up their lead to 6 to 1. 

Will Stinson (1-4) went 5 innings on the mound for the Owls allowing 6 runs (2 Earned runs), on 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 1. Roberto De La Pena pitched one inning in relief allowing 1 hit and striking out 1. Ryan Scepansky (2-2) scattered 7 hits over 6 innings, allowing just 1 run and striking out 4 to get the win for Thomas College. Quinton Stebbins pitched a perfect 7th inning in relief. 

Stinson, Sanderson and Jordan Hanscom (So. Lincoln, ME) each had doubles for the Owls. 


Game #2: In the afternoon's second ballgame, Thomas College scored 1 run in the bottom of the 1st inning and 2 runs in the 3rd to take a 3 to 0 advantage over Me-Presque Isle and were able to keep the Owls off the scoreboard throughout the game as the Terriers went on to an 8 to 0 win. Thomas would add 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to put the game out of reach and complete a sweep of the North Atlantic Conference weekend series.

Junior right-hander Cody Cousins pitched 6 strong innings for Thomas getting the win on the mound and Dominic Esposito finished up in the 7th. Brad Paterson (Jr. Harker Heights, TX) hurled 5-plus innings for UMPI allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 4. Colby Spencer (So. Swan Quarter, NC) pitched an inning in relief for the Owls giving up 1 run on 1 hit and striking out 1.

Brad Patterson was the only repeat hitter for UMPI with 2 singles on the game. Ryan Kappleman and Darren Kelly each had triples for the Terriers.

Next up: The Owls travel to Northern Vermont-Lydon for a four game series on Friday April 19th and Saturday April 20th.
