Bangor, ME - UMaine-Farmington's baseball team completed the sweep over UMaine-Presque Isle on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader played at Husson University.
In Game #1 the Beavers walked away with a 12 to 1 win over the Owls behind Brice Springer who threw seven strong innings to pick up his second win of the season. Springer gave up six hits and one earned run while striking out nine UMPI batters.
UMF opened the game up in the 3rd and 4th innings, scoring 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the 3rd. A Derek Bowen double, a sac fly by Justin Rodrigue, and a wild pitch in the 4th allowed the Beavers to jump out to an 8 to advantge.
Justin Rodrigue led the Beavers (7-10) in hitting after going 2-3 at the plate with three RBI and one run, while Derek Bowen went 1-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Kevin Carter went 3-4 at the plate with two RBI and three runs, and Chase Malloy went 1-3 with an RBI and crossed the plate 3 times.
Jordan Young (Fr. Graham, NC) started on the mound for Me-Presque Isle and went 2.1 innings, giving up two hits, two earned runs, while recording one strikeout. William Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) went two-thirds of an inning and Austin Coulson (So. Bullhead City, AZ) pitched 1.1 innings, giving up six hits, six earned runs with one strikeout.
Stinson had a basehit the lone RBI for the Owls (1-18).
Bangor, ME - In Game #2 of Sunday's doubleheader the Owls got on the scoreboard quickly, scoring a run in the top of the 1st inning when Brad Patterson (Jr. Harker Heights, TX) and Will Stinson each reached on singles. Patterson would score on a Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS) RBI groundout to second baseman Troy Johnson of the Beavers.
UMF (8-10) would tie it up in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Ryan Simard reached on a RBI fielder's choice scoring Johnson. The Beavers would go ahead 2 to 1 in the bottom of the 3rd inning on an infield RBI groundout by Patrick Fallon. Me-Farmington would finish UMPI starting pitcher Brad Patterson's night on the mound in the 4th, with a Derek Bowen RBI single scoring Jake Bessey, and a Kevin Carter 2-run homer over the leftfield fence to give the Beavers a 6 to 1 lead.
The Owls would keep fighting and scored a run in the 6th when catcher Jordan Hanscom (So. Lincoln, ME) ripped a double to the leftfield fence plating Braydon Kennedy. In the 7th Alexe De La Pena (So. Porterville, CA) would reach on a walk and move to second on a wild pitch. De La Pena would cross the plate with one out on a RBI single by Patterson. UMPI would add another baserunner but the Beavers would stop any thoughts of an Owls late inning rally.
Brad Patterson went four innings on the hill for Me-Presque Isle allowing 6 runs on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2. Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) would pitch two outstanding innings in relief allowing only 2 infield hits and keeping UMPI's chances alive.
Justin Rodrigue got the win on the mound for UMF pitching 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, walking 2 and striking out 7. Cole Lockhart threw the 7th inning for the Beavers giving up 1 run on 1 hit, and walking 1.
Brad Patterson had 2 hits for UMPI while Bessey, Carter and Bowen each had 2 hits for UMaine-Farmington.
