Bangor, ME - UMaine-Presque Isle and-UMaine Farmington had to move their 4 game weekend series to Husson University due to field conditions in Farmington, and if Saturday's games were any indication, it should make for some interesting baseball on Sunday afternoon and evening for games #3 and #4.
The first of two on Saturday was a scheduled 9 inning ballgame and both teams were held scoreless until UMPI scored a single run in the top of the 5th inning when Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS) stroked a basehit to centerfield plating Amiyn Summers (Fr. Paulding County, GA) and putting the Owls up 1 to 0. UMF bounced right back in the bottom of the inning as Zach Hartsgrove reached on a fielders choice as Paul Fallon crossed the plate. Jake Bessey would follow with a double bringing in Hartsgrove for a 2 to 1 Beaver's lead.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Beaver's would strike for 3 runs on a 2-RBI triple to left center by Hartsgrove who would then score himself on a wild pitch, and a 5 to 2 UMF advantage.
Ryan Sanderson would triple in Will Stinson in the 7th inning and Jordan Hanscom (So. Lincoln, ME) would rip a single to plate Sanderson and the Owls would close the gap to 5 to 3. After holding UMF scoreless in the bottom of the frame, UMPI would tie up the ballgame in the 8th inning when Ricahard Coulston (Fr. Bullhead City, AZ) would cross the plate on a wild pitch. Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) would drop a single into centerfield to score Brad Patterson (Jr. Harker Heights, TX) and knott the game at 5 apiece.
After a scoreless 9th, the game went into extra innings and the Owls would get on the board with 2 runs and were looking for a win in their first NAC baseball game. Justin Mason (Sr. Stamford, CT) would put Me-Presque Isle up 6 to 5 when he crossed the plate on a Brad Patterson triple to left center. Patterson would add what the Owls hoped was an insurance run scoring on a passed ball and a 7 to 5 lead. The Owls would get the 1st out in the bottom of the 9th against UMF before the Beaver's had two runners reach base. Chase Malloy would get credited with a fielder's choice RBI scoring Zach Hartsgrove as UMPI recorded a force out at second base. With runner's on 1st and 3rd and 2 outs, Derek Bowen lofted a fly ball that turned into an error and both runners scored giving the Beaver's the surprising win.
Braydon Kennedy (Fr. Titusville, FL) started on the mound for UMPI going 5.2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks and 6 strike outs. Lefty Gavin Arsenault went 6 strong innings for UMF allowing just 1 run on 6 hits, 3 walks and striking out 9 UMPI hitters. Kevin Carter picked up the win in relief.
Bangor, ME - In the nightcap UMF rode the strong pitching performance of junior Ryan Pratt who threw a complete game shutout only allowing 2 hits while stiking out 6 and walking none, leading the Beaver's to a 4 to 0 win.
Hits were at a minimum on the cold Saturday night game that ended at 11:40 PM as UMPI starter Colby Spencer (So. Swan Quarter, NC) and reliever Roberto De La Pena (Jr. Porterville, CA) limited the Beaver's to 5 hits on the game.
UMF would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Derek Bowen connected on a deep triple to right center scoring Chase Malloy. Bowen would eventually score on an infiled hit by Kevin Carter and the Beaver's had a 2 to 0 lead.
UMF (6-10) would push across a run in the 5th on a Kevin Carter groundout and another run in the bottom of the 6th on a Ryan Simard fielder's choice scoring Hunter LaBossiere.
Next up: UMPI and UMF play another doubleheader Sunday at Husson University with game times at 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM.
