Nashua, NH - Rivier University swept a Sunday afternoon doubleheader from the UMPI Owls in Non-Conference baseball action played at Harvey Woods Field in Nashua, New Hampshire by the scores of 8 to 0 and 10 to 4.
Me-Presque Isle, playing 6 games in 3 days over the weekend, could not muster any runs against the Raider's starting pitcher Kyle Flannagan who went the distance on the mound pitching 7 strong inning, allowing only 4 UMPI hits while striking out 9.
Rivier University (5-15) broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd inning putting 5 runs on the board highlighted by a RBI single from Brandon Thibault and a basesloaded triple by Fred Kazalski. The Raiders would add 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning for the final 8 to 0 score.
Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS) took the loss on the hill for the Owls, going 3 innings, giving up 5 runs on 3 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 3. Roberto De La Pena, Ian McCray, and Cullen Marella finished out the game in relief for UMPI.
The Owls (1-15) got hits from William Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME), Justin Mason (Sr. Stamford, CT), Jacob Moreno (Fr. Bourne, MA) and Sanderson. Stinson's knock was a double to deep left-centerfield. Thibault, Kazalski and Corey Cochran each had triples for Rivier.
Nashua, NH - In Game #2, the Raiders jumped out to a quick 5 to 0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning and the Owls were not able to recover in a game called after 6 innings due to rain. Rivier was aided by 2 UMPI errors in the 1st inning and received RBI singles from Corey Cochran and Fred Kazalski and a Jorge Martinez 2-RBI double. The Raider's would add another unearned run in the 3rd inning and push across 2 more runs in the 4th for an 8 to 0 lead.
The Owls struck for 4 runs in the top of the 5th inning but stranded a runner on 3rd base as they looked to climb back into the game as the rain started to fall. Brad Patterson (Jr. Harker Heights, TX) stroked a RBI double to deep centerfield and Jacob Moreno followed with a 2-run double to left. Ryan Sanderson then ripped a triple to bring the Owls to within 8 to 4. With only 1 out the Owls were looking to close the gap more but the Raiders got out of the inning with Sanderson left at 3rd base.
Rivier would add a run in the bottom of the 5th and score again in the 6th inning on a RBI double by Brett Iaanazzo.
Jordn Hanscom (So. Lincoln, ME) took the loss on the mound for the Owls. Colby Spencer (So. Swan Quater, NC) pitched 3 solid innings of relief to keep Rivier at bay in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings.
Jake Mainey went 4 innings to get the win giving up 4 runs on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 7. Cameron Way got the save for the Raiders going 2 innings and allowing just 1 hit and striking out 3.
