Owls Win 8 to 6 in 10 Innings at Pine Manor

Brockton, MA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Baseball Team traveled to Pine Manor College in Massachusetts for a doubleheader on Friday and the first of 6 games on the weekend.

In the 12:00 noontime opener at Campanelli Stadium (Home of the Brockton Rox Baseball Team), the Owls (1-10) and Gators (4-9), playing in a scheduled 7 inning game, took 10 innings to get a decision with the Owls coming out on top 8 to 6. 

Me-Presque Isle got a leadoff homerun by Brad Patterson (Jr. Harker Heights, TX) in the top of the 1st inning for a quick 1 to 0 lead. The Owls then added 3 more runs in the 2nd inning with 1 out when Jordan Hanscom (So. Lincoln, ME) reached on an infield error and moved up to second base on a passed ball. Leftfielder Ian McCray (Fr. Coppell, TX) follwed with a line drive RBI single. Alexe De La Pena ( So. Porterville, CA) dropped a single in front of the centerfielder followed by a Richard Coulston  (Fr. Bullhead City, AZ) sac bunt. Brad Patterson brought in both runners with a bloop double.

Me-Presque Isle held a 5 to 3 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning when the Gators tied the game up to send it into extra frames on a 2 RBI single by Evan Reynolds.

Pine Manor loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th inning with no outs before Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) struck out the Gators # 2 hitter Terry Daniels. Stinson then got Randall Adams to ground to shortstop Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS) who cut down the runner at the plate on a strong throw to Owls catcher Jordan Hanscom. The Owls then got out of the jam when Stinson struck out cleanup hitter Cedrick Pena.

In the top of the 10th inning Jordan Hanscom and Ian McCray each reached base on walks. Alexe De La Pena moved both runners over with a perfect sacrafice bunt down the 1st base line. After a strike out, Brad Patterson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Will Stinson reached on an infield error to score Hanscom and then McCray and Patterson scored on a Jacob Moreno (Fr. Bourne, MA) single to left field to give UMPI an 8 to 5 advantage. Pine Manor would score a run in the bottom of the 10th on a sac fly by Junior Veras but Stinson and the Owls would close the door to get their initial win of the 2019 season. 

Colby Spencer (Swan Quarter, NC) got the start for UMPI going 6 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned runs) on 6 hits, 7 strike outs and 3 walks. Will Stinson got the win in relief throwing 3 innings giving up 5 hits and 1 run while striking out 3 and walking 1. The Gators Dante CuCuzza went 7 innings and gave up 7 hits on 5 runs (2 earned runs) with 7 K's and 3 walks. Joe Mello came on in relief in the 9th inning and got the loss on the mound for Pine Manor. 

Repeat hitters for the Owls included Patterson with a single, double and solo homerun and 3 RBI. Jacob Moreno had 2 singles and 2 RBI. 


Brockton, MA – In Friday's second game Pine Manor earned the split with a 7 to 1 victory over UMPI behind the pitching of sophomore Lorenze Pantaleo. Pantaleo struck out 7 UMPI hitters, walking 4 and giving up 1 run on 4 hits. 

The Gators got off to an early 2 to 0 lead when sophomore Randall Adams connected for a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 1st inning. Pine Manor would add a run in the 3rd inning on a RBI single by Isaiah Mack and then up their lead to 6 to 0 over the Owls with 3 runs in the 4th. 

UMPI couldn't get the bats going in the second game against Pantaleo until finally pushig across a run in top of the 7th inning when Alexe De La Pena ripped a sinlg to centerfield and eventually scored when forced im on a bases loaded walk to Brad Patterson.

Roberto De La Pena (Jr. Porterville, CA) took the loss on the rubber for UMPI. He lasted three and a third innings, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out five and walking one.

Next up: Me-Presque Isle plays Fisher College at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM vs. Pine Manor, both games being played at Frasier Stadium in Lynn, MA.
