Owls Lose to SUNY Canton Late in Game 6 to 3

Lynn, MA - The UMPI Owls Baseball Team were tied 3 to 3 with SUNY Canton into the bottom of the 8th inning in a well played ballgame before losing a tough battle 6 to 3, and losing starting pitcher Braydon Kennedy in the 8th inning as well. 

It was a scary moment when Kennedy was on the receiving end of a line drive back at the mound that struck him in the face in the 8th. Kennedy was treated on the field and later taken to a local hospital. SUNY Canton scored three times when Brian Santana crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Jesse Iacovetta go give the Roos the lead. Brandon Bautista followed with a single to centerfield plating a run and 2 outs later Ben Miller had a RBI single to bring in Bautista and a 6 to 3 advantage over the Owls.

UMPI got on the board first in the game when Jacob Moreno (Fr. Bourne, MA) ripped a double to the fence in rightfield and Richard Coulston (Fr. Bullhead City, AZ) drilled a RBI single to score Moreno for a 1 to 0 Owls lead in the 2nd. SUNY Canton bounced back in the bottom of the frame to tie the game up on a RBI sac fly by Brett Hoberman scoring Collin Lynk. In the bottom of the 3rd the Roos took a slim 2 to 1 lead on anoter sacrifice fly, this time off the bat of shortstop Edward Malinoski.

In the top of the 6th the Owls led off with three straight singles by Will Stinson (Fr. Norridgewok, ME), Justin Mason (Sr. Stamford, CT) and Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS). Stinson scored on an infield groundout by Braydon Kennedy and Mason crossed the plate on a sac fly by Moreno to put Me-Presque Isle back on top 3 to 2. 

Hoberman would knott the game at 3 to 3 in the 7th with a RBI single scoring Santana before SUNY Canton had a 3-run 8th inning for the final margin of victory 6 to 3.

Braydon Kennedy (Fr. Titusville, FL) started on the mound for UMPI pitching 7 plus innings before his injury, allowing only 4 hits, 1 walk and striking out 5. Ryan Sanderson and Roberto De La Pena (Jr. Porterville, CA) both came on in relief in the 8th inning for the Owls

Sophomore Collin Trathen went 7 innings for SUNY Canton giving up 8 hits, 3 earned runs while walking 2 and striking out 9. Zack Newman (1-0) got the win in relief going the final 2 frames not allowing a hit or run and striking out 5 Owl hitters.

Will Stinson and Richard Coulston were repeat hitters with 2 singles each as the Owls had 8 hits on the game as a Team. Kennedy, Moreno and Coulston each recorded 1 RBI. Brett Hoberman was the only repeat hitter for SUNY Canton with 2 basehits.

 

Lynn, MA - In the nightcap of Saturday's Clemente Cup, Northern Vermont-Lyndon (2-11) opened up a 1 to 1 game when they exploded for a 9-run 3rd inning in which the wheels fell off defensively for UMPI as they committed 3 errors in the frame. Jason Doris, Tucker Root and Caleb LaRoche each had RBI singles knocking in unearned runs for the Hornets in the big inning. 

Jacob Moreno had a RBI double to right field scoring Justin Mason in the 1st inning to give the Owls an early 1 to 0 lead. Moreno added a RBI single in the top of the 6th inning for the other UMPI run.

Colby Spencer (So Swan Quarter, NC) started on the hill for Me-Presque Isle followed by Austin Colson (So. Bullhead City, AZ). Moreno had a single and double and Mason stroked a double for the Owls.
