Rocky Mount, NC - The UMPI Owls (0-3) played an outstanding Game #1 of a doubleheader against a highly regarded North Carolina Wesleyan team (14-6) falling 2 to 0 on Tuesday afternoon at Bauer Field.
NC Wesleyan used a leadoff solo home run from junior second baseman Brad Pennington off UMPI freshman starting pitcher Braydon Kennedy (Titusville, FL) to grab a quick 1 to 0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. In the 3rd inning catcher Nick beaver plated Pennington and the Battling Bishops went up 2 to 0. The crisply played game saw excellent pitching by both clubs and several outstanding defensive plays in the contest.
Kennedy (0-1) threw an outstanding game for the Owls in his first collegiate start going 6 innings, allowing only 4 hits to the potent NC Wesleyan lineup, 2 earned runs with 1 walk and 5 strike outs.
Freshman pitcher Grant Bartlett started game 1 on the mound for the Bishops and tossed 3 scoreless innings. Junior reliever Connor Stratton (2-0) then came on to throw two scoreless frames and got credited with the win while junior reliever Noah Schrock picked up the save.
Me-Presque Isle was outside for just the 3rd time so far this season. "I was very pleased with the way we bounced back after our opening doubleheader yesterday at Greensboro. Our guys played a great 1st game against a very talented team. We also, saw some positives in Game #2," said Head Coach Roger Stinson.
Rocky Mount, NC -The Bishops got the bats going in game two scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the first, another run in the second, and then five more in the fourth to put the game away. Trey Croom drove in the first two runs for the Bishops on a two-run triple. He was then followed by an RBI single from freshman Andrew Nichols and a two-run single from leftfielder Logan Andrews.
Croom also drove in the next two runs for the Bishops with his 2nd inning RBI double scoring DH Brandon Wheat and his 4th inning RBI single scoring Cedrick Kornegay. Nichols again followed Croom with another RBI single before shortstop Alec Titmus cleared the bases with a three-run double making the score 11-0 in the 4th inning.
William Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) scored the Owls 1st run in the 7th crossing the plate on a double play grounder. Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS) scored the 2nd UMPI run on a RBI single by Braydon Kennedy (Fr. Titusville, FL). The Owls only recorded two hits for the game with Richard Coulston (Fr. Bullhhead City, AZ) getting the other hit.
Junior Pitcher Gaylen Beaver picked up the win on the mound for NC Wesleyan throwing 3 scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts.
Next up: The Owls play in Newport News, Virginia tomorrow (Wednesday) against the Apprentice School Builders at 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
