Owls Baseball Team Drops 2 Games at Greensboro College

Greensboro, NC - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Baseball Team got outside for the very first time on Sunday in North Carolina for a practice before their opening doubleheader at Greensboro College. The Owls (0-1) started off well despite a 4 run 2nd inning by the Pride (5-11). UMPI bounced back with 2 runs of their own in the top of the 3rd inning when Braydon Kennedy (Fr. Titusville, FL) walked, moved to second when Richard Coulston (Fr. Bullhead City, AZ) reached on an error and scored on an RBI groundout by Jordan Hanscom (So. Lincoln, ME). Coulston scored the Owls 2nd run of the inning on a RBI single by Justin Mason (Sr. Stamford, CT).

UMPI only trailed 4 to 2 into the bottom of the 5th inning when Greensboro's Lincoln Hewett stroked an RBI double and Chance Bryant and Jacob Rodriguez each were credited with RBI fielders choice. Two walks and a hit batter allowed the Pride to take a 7 to 2 lead. Greensboro then exploded for 5 runs in the 6th inning to go up 12 to 3. UMPI scored when Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow bay, NS) connected for a double, advanced on a passed ball and scored when Jacob Moreno (Fr. Bourne, MA) ripped a base hit.

Sanderon was the only repeat hitther for Me-Presque Isle with a single and a double while Hewett and Scotty McGuire each had two doubles for Greensboro. Hewett also had 4 RBI.

Colby Spencer (So. Swan Quarter, NC) (0-1) started on the mound for UMPI going 4.1 innings giving up 6 runs but only 3 earned runs on 3 walks and 2 strike outs. Preston Snyder (1-2) got the win for Greensboro going 5 innings, giving up 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 5.

 

Greensboro, NC - Greensboro picked up right where they left off from the opening game as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before adding six more runs in the second inning on their way to a 16 to 5 win over the Owls.

Lincoln Hewett continued his hot start to the day with a one out RBI triple in the first inning before coming across the plate on a Scotty McGuire ground out. In the second, Tyler Price, Curtis, and Blake Bond each recorded one RBI as Greensboro scored three runs on three miscues by the Owls.

UMPI had 5 hits in the 2nd game of the doubleheader including a double and an RBI by Jacob Moreno. Sanderson, Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok. ME) and Brad Patterson (Harrker Heights, TX) each had an RBI for the Owls.

Richard Coulston (Fr. Bullhead City, AZ) (0-1) started on the hill for UMPI allowing 8 runs on 7 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings of work.

Jacob Switzer picked up his first win of the season after pitching the first five innings before giving way to Garrett Ward. Will White struck out seven batters over the final 3 2/3 innings.

Next up: UMPI will play two games at North Carolina Wesleyan on Tuesday.
