The UMPI Owls (4-29 in 2018) are entering their first season in the North Atlantic Conference and return 3 key starters from last year's team, along with some pivotal players from a year ago and incoming freshman who will play key roles right away for the Owls. Second year head coach Roger Stinson welcomes back senior shortstop Ryan Sanderson (Cow Bay, Nova Scotia) who was selected CUNYAC All-Star (.327 batting average).The Owls also return junior catcher Will Stinson (Norridgewock, ME) .263 average as well as junior Brad Patterson (Harker Heights, TX) .250 average who will likely move back into the infield this season.
"Sandy" as Ryan is known to with his teammates is coming back for his Senior year after leading the team with a .327 batting average and 16 RBI's. "Sandy is a player every coach wants on their team," Coach Stinson says. Will Stinson returns for his 3rd year with the Owls and will see most of his innings behind the dish as he has the previous 2 seasons, batted .263 last season, with 26 hits on the season. Brad Patterson who stepped up last season for the Owls and moved to Centerfield batted .250 and led the team in stolen bases with (10).
The Owls also are returning some veteran pitching that look to get on track this season after all have worked hard in the off-season combined with several freshman who will see mound time. Included in this group are Roberto DeLaPena (Jr. Portersville, CA) and Colby Spencer, (So. Swan Quarter, NC) , UMPI will also look for Jordan Hanscom (So. Lincoln, ME), Austin Coulston (So. Bullhead, AZ), Stinson and Sanderson to see innings this season for them.
Freshman Jacob Moreno (Bourne, MA), Richard Coulston (Bullshead AZ), Braydon Kennedy (Titusvile FL), Amiyn Summers ( Paulding County, GA), Jordan Young (Graham, NC) , Ian McCray (Coppell, TX), Cullen Marrella (Willard, NY), Collin Racine (Rutland, VT) are accompanied by sophomore's Alexe DeLaPena (Portersville, CA), Grant Bridges (Presque Isle, ME), Sora Tajima and senior Justin Mason (Stamford, CT) to complete the Owls roster.
ME-Presque Isle will open their season Monday March 18th with two 9 inning games at Greensboro College and will continue their opening Southern swing with games at North Carolina-Wesleyan, Apprentice, Stratford, and Marymount before moving up the East Coast to play 4 games in the Clemente Cup in Lynn, Massachusetts.
