Owls Fall on Senior Day

Orono, ME—The University of Maine Presque Isle Owls baseball team ended their senior day games on the wrong side of a sweep in this Friday's doubleheader vs. Pine Manor College, 8-2 and 7-6.

Before the games began, the seniors were celebrated for all of their hard work and dedication to the UMPI baseball team.  The seniors included captains, Matt Curry (Caribou, ME), Matt Cauchon (Kingston, MA), and Saul Nunez (Mapleton, ME); along with his brother Frank Nunez (Mapleton, ME) and Tyler McLaughlin (Fremont, CA)

After the game was scoreless for the first five innings the Gators took control in a big sixth inning rally.  Mack Isaiah and Randal Adams each singled bringing in a run, while Jesus Ortega tripled to bring in three more runs.

A couple more runs came for the Gators in the seventh off an error and a SAC fly by Ortega.  Some smart base running by the Owls earned them a run in the seventh as Bradley Patterson (Harker Heights, TX) stole second allowing Ryan Sanderson (Cow Bay, NS) to steal home, giving the Owls their first run of the game. S. Nunez followed with a single to bring Patterson home.

Dante Cucuzza earned the win on the mound, pitching the complete game with three strikeouts, allowing four hits.  Colby Spencer (Fairfield, NC) gets eight strikeouts in his lose.

The Owls came out strong in the second game. Coming out hot in the first inning, Sanderson started with a RBI double, S. Nunez followed with a RBI single.  Two more runs came off an error by the Gators and a SAC grounder by Patterson.  A double by Curry scored two more runs in the second.

UMPI's defense stayed strong early in the game, only giving up two hits and zero runs in the first four innings.  Adams hit a two run homer in the fifth to end the Gators drought.  Derrick Tolbert added another run in the sixth with a SAC fly.

It wasn't until the seventh inning where the Owls gave up the lead.  Back to back doubles by Eduary Baez and Evan Reynolds tied the game at six.  It was an error by the infield that allowed a pop-up to hit the ground allowing Ortega to score the game-winning run for the Gators.

Alec Hanney earned the win on the mound with a complete game, earning three strikeouts and allowing seven hits.  McLaughlin gets seven K's in his lose.

The Owls look to take on Colby College in their final regular season match up. Games are on Sunday the 29th, games at 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM.
