Dobbs Ferry, NY – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls earned their first sweep of the year in a doubleheader vs. the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels. The Owls win 7-6 in a late game comeback for game one, and fight off a comeback in an 8-7 win in game two.
The Blue Angels started early with a 1-0 lead in the first, coming off of a double by Albert Rodriguez. With their defense holding up, only allowing two hits, New Rochelle rallied in the fourth. Runs coming off a bunt by Thomas Velazquez, and a double by Adam Gonzalez; while a triple by Jared Edwards added two more runs. Their final run of the inning came off a fielder's choice as Juan Diaz grounded out, giving the Blue Angels a 6-0 lead.
A Matt Curry (Caribou, ME) double in the sixth cut into the lead, bringing in one run for the Owls. With only the seventh inning remaining the Owls came up with a clutch rally. After Will Stinson (Skowhegan, ME) reached third on an error, Keanu Vincente (Pawtucket, RI) drove him home with a single. Later in the inning with two outs and the bases loaded, coming off three walks, Ryan Sanderson (Cow Bay, NS) cracked a GRAND SLAM to tie the game at six.
After Bradley Patterson (Harker Heights, TX) was walked, then advancing to second off an Austin Coulston (Bullhead City, AZ) single, Stinson singled to center field to bring Patterson home, giving the Owls a one point lead.
It was only fitting that Sanderson would finish the game on the mound, as he did at the plate. Coming in for Saul Nunez, whom pitched six innings, Sanderson clinched the win.
The owls stayed hot in game two, with a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. With the bases loaded early, Curry singled to bring in one run. Sanderson and Patterson followed with a single each as well, bringing in three more runs. Rocky Baez answered for the Blue Angels with a double in the bottom of the first to make the score 4-1.
Continuing the early scoring, Sanderson earned yet another RBI on the day, with a single bringing Tyler McLaughlin (Fremont, CA) home. Patterson grounded out to bring in another run, adding too the Owls lead, 6-1.
New Rochelle continued to fight back with a second inning rally. A single, a fielder's choice, and an Owls error each allowed a run to score for the Blue Angels, closing the lead to just two. In the top of the third, Stinson added a run off of a couple Blue Angels errors.
As the Blue Angels picked up their defense, their offense showed out as well. Robert Hart doubled in the third to bring in a run. With the bases loaded in the fifth Roberto De La Pena (Porterville, CA) walked in a run, while Gonzalez tied the game with a single.
This time it was Nunez coming in the clutch with a solo shot in the seventh to give the Owls a one-point lead. Sanderson closed out the game on the mound once again.
The Owls continue their weekend of doubleheaders with another one Sunday the 15th vs. John Jay College, games at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
