Bangor, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle took on in-state rival Husson University this afternoon. The Eagles took the sweep winning game one 5-1 and game two 6-2 in the doubleheader.
Game one began in a defensive battle as there were only five hits in the first four innings, keeping the game scoreless though the fourth. Owls' shortstop Angel Morales (Windsor, CT) ended the scoring drought with a single up the middle to bring Jordan Hanscom (Lincoln, ME) home.
The Eagles came alive in the sixth; three base hits followed with an error by the Owls to bring in Nick Guerrette home to tie that game at one. Guerrette earned an RBI himself in the seventh inning with a SAC grounder, allowing Mike Wong to give Husson a one-point lead.
UMPI would stay scoreless the remainder of the game, as the Eagles pulled away in the eighth. A single and a couple of walks loaded the bases, allowing Luke Covey to score off a fielder's choice. Tyler Young scored the final run of the game by a passed ball, 4-1 Eagles win. Austin Smith earned the win on the mound for the Eagles in his seven of the nine innings pitched.
The Owls started early behind a Bradley Patterson (Harker Heights, TX) double to give them a 1-0 lead in the first. With the bases loaded Luke Covet would immediately return the favor with a double himself, bringing in three Eagles players. Stefen Strachan added a single to bring in another run, as Husson lead 4-1 in the end of the first.
Gurrette got himself in scoring position after a couple stolen bases, allowing Alex Chapman to bring him home off a single up the middle. UMPI's Left fielder Jesus Garcia (Jewett City, CT) scored one more on a throwing error by the Husson third baseman, 2-5. The Eagles would score one more in the sixth off a throwing error by UMPI.
The Owls could not manage to bring in any more runs in the seven inning game; final score 6-2. Cam Graham earned the win on the mound for the Eagles.
