Lynn, MA – University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls split their double header this Friday against Rivier University Raiders. After losing the first game 2-0 the Owls came back strong in a 12-3 win in the game two.
Pitchers Saul Nunez (Mapleton, ME) and Kyle Flanagan of the Raiders put on a show striking out 12 batters total. Nunez finished with one walk, while only allowing three hits and one earned run. Two of those runs coming in the bottom of the sixth, one being a single by Brandon Thibault, which brought the only two runs of the game in.
Flanagan earned the win on the mound in game one with seven strikeouts and also only allowing three hits for the Owls. Game two was a different story for the Rivier pitchers.
The first two innings, similar to game one, ended with only one hit a piece for both teams. A triple by Ryan Sanderson (Cow Bay, NS) ended the drought for the Owls, bringing Angel Morales (Windsor, CT) home. Matt Cauchon (Kingston, MA) followed with a single to bring Sanderson home. Bradley Patterson (Harker Heights, TX) added a single to bring in the last run of the third for UMPI.
The runs started flowing in the fourth as the Owls put up eight more runs. Some errors and a walk by the Raiders brought two runs home. Will Stinson (Skowhegan, ME) followed with a single to bring Sanderson in. Patterson, Nunez and Keanu Vincente (Pawtucket, RI) each singled to tack on three more runs, ending the huge rally in the fourth.
The Raiders added to their one run back in the third, with an RBI double by Ferdinand to give Rivier two more runs. UMPI added their final run of the day in the seventh off a wild pitch to give them a 12-3 lead. Freshman Colby Spencer (Fairfield, NC) earned his first career win on the mound for the Owls, with seven K's and only six hits.
UMPI takes on Baruch College in a double header tomorrow, Saturday 31; games starting at noon and 3:00 PM.
