Yaphank, NY – Owls earn their first win of the year in a near sweep against The City College of New York. Owls win the first of the double header 8-4, while losing a close second game 4-3 in eight innings.
Ryan Sanderson (Cow Bay, NS) starts the game off with a homer down the right field line giving UMPI a 1-0 lead in the second. Eric Giglio and Stephen Peters both single in the fourth to bring three runs home for the Beavers, giving them a 3-1 lead. Jesus Garcia (Jewett City, CT) and Jordan Hanscom (Lincoln, ME) each score in the fifth off an error by CCNY, tying the game at three.
Anthony Sautter hits a sacrifice fly to give the Beavers a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Owls Justin Mason's (Stamford, CT) ground out allowed Matt Cauchon (Kingston, MA) to score tying the game in the sixth. Keanu Vincente (Pawtucket, RI) hit a double down the right field line bringing Garcia and Sanderson home giving the Owls a 6-4 lead. Matt Curry (Caribou, ME) and Sanderson both doubled in the seventh, each bringing in a run, to make the score 7-4.
Tyler McLaughlin (Fremont, CA) would receive his first win of his senior year on the mound with seven strikeouts only allowing eight hits
Game two would start with strong defense by both teams, as the first run came in the fifth by a throwing error by the Owls. Giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Saul Nunez (Mapleton, ME) answered big in the sixth as he hit his first career homer over the right field fence, bringing in three runs.
A late game comeback by the Beavers tied the game with a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh. A single by Cooper York gave the Beavers the win in the bottom of the eighth.
