Owls Hang With U Maine, Black Bears Surge Late

ORONO, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (3-25) would hang in with their Division I opponent the U Maine Black Bears (15-20) on Tuesday evening.  The Black Bears would get a big sixth inning to end up taking the game by a score of 8-1.

UMPI would miss on a scoring opportunity in the second, when they would strand two runners, and again in the fifth when they would not be able to score despite loading the bases.  The Black Bears would finally crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when with two outs a Christopher Bec (JR, Miami, FL) double would drive in two.  U Maine would extend their lead in the sixth, taking advantage of five hits and two UMPI errors to plate six runs.

The Owls would respond in the seventh when Angel Morales (FR, Windsor, CT) would hit a fly ball double into the right field corner that would drive in a run with no one out.  UMPI would strand two in that inning however, ending the comeback attempt.

Saul Nunez (JR, Mapleton, ME) would go two for three for the Owls in the matchup.  Tyler McLaughlin (JR, Fremont, CA) would take the loss on the mound, despite a strong performance.  He would keep the U Maine offense off-balance for five innings, striking out one and giving up just four hits.

The Owls will wrap up regular season play this weekend.  On Friday they will play a 2 PM doubleheader at Dean College.  On Saturday Massachusetts Maritime Academy will host a 1 PM doubleheader, and UMPI will round out their trip with a single game at Lasell College, a noon start on Sunday.
